Mouse

Customize PixPin mouse bindings for pins, including zoom, opacity, thumbnails, dragging, and selection, with defaults, conflicts, and platform differences.

Open Configuration → Mouse to customize what scrolling, clicking, and dragging on pins do. For example, assign Copy content to an unused side button or add a convenient click combination for Markup Toolbar.

On Windows and macOS, this page contains one Pin group with 18 items. The sections below explain them by purpose using the page's labels. Global Mouse is a separate page for drag-to-capture gestures over other apps.

The first five Windows options; the rest are omitted. An empty left field means no modifier is needed; None on the right means no binding. macOS shows ⇧, ⌘, ⌥, and ⌃.

Set a mouse combination

Each row contains the operation name, modifiers, a plus sign, the mouse action, and a status icon, in that order. The modifier field on the left allows none or multiple selections; the right field offers only action types applicable to that operation.

Operation typeChoices on the right
WheelWheel or None; zoom cannot be changed to a click
ClickSingle or double clicks with the left, right, middle, X1 (Back), or X2 (Forward) button, or None
DragDrag with the left, right, middle, X1, or X2 button, or None

To bind a side button to Copy content, find the row, leave all modifiers unchecked, and select X1(Back) Click on the right. Changes apply immediately; try the button on a pin without pressing an extra Apply button.

Selecting None on the right removes this row's mouse binding without removing the feature from the context menu. Leaving all modifiers unchecked means no modifier is needed, not that the operation is disabled. Your mouse must have the button and send its events to the app.

Modifiers on Windows and macOS

Windows displaymacOS displaymacOS key name

For example, Adjust transparency defaults to Ctrl plus wheel on Windows and Command plus wheel on macOS. Keycaps below adapt to the platform; this mapping does not directly apply to global shortcuts.

Understand status and conflicts

Row-end statusMeaning and response
Green check markNo binding conflict is currently detected
Gray stop icon with No setNone is selected on the right
Red cross with Cannot set left-click separatelyA left click without modifiers cannot be bound to an operation. This combination is not saved, and the previous binding remains. Add a modifier or use another mouse button
Warning icon with a conflict messageAn operation in this group already uses the combination. Change one binding or set the unused one to None

Single and double clicks on the left, right, or middle button with the same modifiers also count as conflicts, preventing a single-click action during a double click. The warning neither removes old bindings nor means both operations will run; resolve it before trying.

Pins

These are the initial default bindings; use your own settings if you have changed them.

Zoom, opacity, and reset

OptionDefault operationUsage
ScaleWheelEnlarge or shrink a pin, with a default 10% step
Fine-tune scaleAlt⌥ Option + wheelMake small adjustments, with a default 1% step, useful for aligning reference images
Adjust transparencyCtrl⌘ Command + wheelChange opacity by 5 percentage points per step by default to see content beneath the pin
ResetMiddle ClickRestore zoom and opacity to 100%; repeat to return to the previous values. This does not clear annotations or reset window position

This page determines which input triggers an operation. Set the adjustment step, zoom reference, and whether zoom is enabled under Zoom and thumbnails in pin settings. For example, Mouse wheel zoom mode set to Disable prevents zoom even if the wheel remains bound.

Reset uses Middle button zoom mode even if reassigned to a side button. If that mode is Disable, mouse reset does nothing.

Close, destroy, and copy

OptionDefault operationUsage
CloseLeft Double ClickClose a pin; recover it while its history remains available
Copy content and closeNoneCopy first, then close the pin, useful for temporary content
DestoryNoneDestroy the pin and its record; ordinary close recovery cannot restore it
Copy contentNoneRun the pin's copy operation. Results differ for images, text, and other types; the pin is not automatically closed
Copy TextShift⇧ Shift + right clickCopy plain text. With an OCR layer on an image pin, copy selected text or all recognized text; no new recognition runs if no text is available

Closing and destruction follow the lock and confirmation options in pin settings. Copy content and close copies first, so canceling the subsequent close confirmation does not undo the copy.

Image type when saving or copying determines whether image copies retain current zoom, opacity, and thumbnail bounds.

Thumbnails and visible regions

Thumbnail mode shows only part of a pin, useful for long tables, chat logs, or large reference images. These three items select, toggle, and move the visible region.

  • Select the visible areaRight-drag to keep part of the image.
  • Show only the selectionShift + left double-click restores the full pin.
  • Pan visible contentShift + left-drag; the window stays in place.
Default bindings are illustrated. The last two windows have the same size and position; only the visible source area changes. Selecting an area does not delete the rest of the image.
OptionDefault operationUsage
Select thumbnail regionRight DragSelect the portion to retain on the pin; releasing shows only that part. You can select again while in thumbnail mode
ThumbnailShift⇧ Shift + left double-clickSwitch between the full pin and thumbnail mode
Move thumbnail regionShift⇧ Shift + left dragPan the visible content in thumbnail mode to view other parts of the original; this does not move the window elsewhere

A selection that is too small has no effect; try a larger rectangle. Thumbnails only change display, so returning to the full pin still shows the original content.

In thumbnail mode, hold Shift⇧ Shift and scroll to browse vertically. This takes priority over this page's wheel bindings. Avoid Shift-plus-wheel bindings for zoom or opacity, which could behave differently in thumbnail mode.

Menus, annotation, dragging, and multi-select

  • Text may be selected firstDragging on selectable text may start text selection.
  • Move the entire pinUse Ignore OCR adjustment to bypass the text layer.
  • Drag content to another appUse Drag content so the target app can receive it.
By default, Alt (Option on macOS) + left-drag bypasses the text layer; Ctrl (Command on macOS) + left-drag drags content out. The target window and content are illustrative.
OptionDefault operationUsage
MenuRight ClickOpen the pin context menu
Markup ToolbarNoneTurn the current pin's annotation state on or off for quick access to annotation
AdjustmentLeft DragDrag inside the pin to move it, or drag its border to resize if Use borders to control window size is enabled
Ignore OCR adjustmentAlt⌥ Option + left dragBypass selectable text to move or adjust the pin directly, avoiding accidental text selection; OCR results are not deleted
Drag contentCtrl⌘ Command + left dragDrag pin content to another app that accepts drops. The target decides how to receive it; this does not move the pin window
Multi-selectCtrl⌘ Command + left clickAdd a pin to or remove it from a multi-selection to move, zoom, and otherwise manage pins together

Drag content and Multi-select use the same default modifier; the difference is holding and dragging versus pressing and releasing a click. Left dragging on selectable text can also select text first. To move the whole pin, use Ignore OCR adjustment.

With several pins selected, closing or destroying a selected pin affects the entire selection. Check which windows are selected before acting.

If a binding does nothing

Check the binding status first, then whether the current pin allows the operation:

  • Match the exact combination. A binding with only Ctrl does not automatically match Ctrl plus Shift. Hold the required modifiers before dragging.
  • Text and annotations may handle the mouse first. Double-clicking selectable text can select it; dragging during annotation can draw a mark. Try a blank area or leave annotation mode first.
  • Check lock, click-through, and zoom settings. Locking can prevent movement or click-to-close; click-through sends input to the window below. Rebinding does not enable disabled wheel zoom.
  • Check that the action applies to this content. Copying text requires available text, panning a thumbnail requires thumbnail mode, and dragging content requires a target that accepts it.

To start over, click Restore Default on this page and confirm to restore its 18 mouse bindings. This does not reset steps or confirmation options on the Pin page; Restore All Default affects other pages as well.
