Formula recognition

Recognize formulas in screenshots or image pins as LaTeX, correct their source, choose delimiters and copy formats, or export documents and images.

Recognize mathematical formulas in papers, slides, or images as LaTeX source, then correct them for use in documents or equation typesetting. To display a formula directly, copy its image or export an image file.

Start from a screenshot or image pin

Press Ctrl+1⌃ Control+1 to take a screenshot and select the entire formula, keeping fraction bars, superscripts, subscripts, and parentheses.

Expand the screenshot toolbar's more menu and choose LaTeX recognition, which is formula recognition. It is in the secondary area by default. You can also press Shift+F⇧ Shift+F.

Wait for recognition to finish, then check the formula against the original image in the window.

For an existing image pin, right-click and choose Recognition → Formula Recognition, or focus the pin and press Shift+F⇧ Shift+F.

Multiple results default to All formulas. Click one on the right to edit its source. The first is selected here; copying is on the right of the source title bar.

Select a formula and edit its source

The window has the original image on the left, a formula preview and LaTeX source in the middle, and recognized formulas on the right. With multiple results, All formulas is selected by default. You can copy or export them together, but the combined source is read-only.

Click a formula on the right to edit its source in the middle; the preview updates with your changes. A single result opens directly in an editable state with the right-hand list hidden. To remove an unwanted result, right-click its list item and choose Delete formula.

At the top right, switch between Formulas and image, Image only, and Formulas only. A narrow window automatically hides the original image in comparison mode. Choosing Formulas and image again restores a wider comparison window. The preview and source sections can collapse, but at least one stays expanded.

If you see Invalid LaTeX · showing the last valid preview, the preview does not represent the current draft. Incomplete input is retained and can still be copied as LaTeX or plain text. Correct the source before copying images, converting to other formats, or exporting. In All formulas mode, any invalid formula affects output for the entire group.

Choose LaTeX delimiters

The dropdown in the source title bar sets the markers around each formula. The default is $$ for display formulas. Choose what your destination editor needs so you do not have to add delimiters to each formula after copying.

The same formula with different delimiters: inline on the left and the default display form on the right. These markers are copied with the LaTeX source.
OptionCopied form
No delimitersFormula source only
$ or \( inline formulaWrapped in $…$ or \(…\)
$$ or \[ display formulaWrapped in $$…$$ or \[…\], on a separate line
equation / equation*A numbered / unnumbered equation environment

With All formulas selected, each formula gets its own delimiters, and formulas are separated by blank lines. The typesetting tool receiving the code determines how numbering appears.

Choose a copy format for your task

Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the copy button in the source title bar. Choosing a format copies immediately and remembers the choice. The main button then keeps using that format; the scope is the selected formula or All formulas.

Choose one or all formulas, then a copy format. Word document is selected here; paste normally in the destination. Menu descriptions are omitted; the left illustrates the pasted result.
PurposeFormat
Paste into a LaTeX editorLaTeX
Get the source textPlain text; this is still LaTeX source, not natural language
Display in documents or slidesFormula image
Use another formula notationMathML, AsciiMath, or Typst
Paste an editable equation into a documentWord document

After choosing Word document, paste normally into the destination document. To save a separate document, use the DOCX export described below.

Pressing Ctrl+C⌘ Command+C usually copies the current format. When the source editor has focus and text is selected, the selected raw text takes priority. Click the copy button to copy the entire formula or all formulas.

Export files or open a document

Check whether one formula or All formulas is selected, then click Export at the top.

FormatSuitable output
Word document (.docx)Keeps editable equations, each written separately into the same document
Vector image (.svg)A formula image that stays sharp when enlarged
PNG image (.png)A formula image on a white background for insertion into other apps
Other image formatsBMP, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF; saving depends on available format support

Exporting all formulas as an image places them vertically in a single image. Exporting does not change the clipboard.

Open in… at the top generates a temporary DOCX and opens it in the system's associated document app. To choose a save location yourself, use Export → Word document.

Adjust window preferences

The gear at the top right opens Formula preferences. Remove redundant spaces is on by default. Closing after copying formulas, closing after copying selected text, using a single recognition window, and closing the source pin after recognition are all off by default.

With Use a single recognition window enabled, a new recognition closes other formula recognition windows. Leave it off to compare results side by side. Text size changes only the source display size, not the formula content.

Formula recognition requires an internet connection. On failure or No formulas found, the original image remains and you can retry. You can also select a clearer, more complete formula area.
